Ereignis

Definition:
acontecimento-apropriação [Ernildo Stein]
evénément-appropriation [EssaisConf]
event [BTJS]
a-propriar
acontecimento apropriador [Casanova]
Enowning [GA65]

NOTE DU TRADUCTEUR: 4.
[GA7:348]

The phrase "comes to pass" renders the German verb sich ereignet (from sich ereignen, to happen or take place). The noun Ereignis usually means, correspondingly, event. Later in this essay (p. 45), Heidegger points to the fact that Ereignis, and with it necessarily sich ereignen, embodies the meanings of the two verbs eignen (to be one´s own, to suit, to belong to), and the archaic eraugnen (to bring before the eyes, to bring to sight). He says: Ereignis ist eignende Eräugnis ("Disclosing coming-to-pass is bringing-to-sight that brings into its own") (p. 45). Although the introduction of this fullness of meaning for sich ereignen and Ereignis has-been reserved in the translation for the point at which Heidegger´s definitive statement is made, that meaning clearly informs the argument of the essay throughout and should therefore be borne in mind. [QCTechno, 38]

NT: Event (Ereignis): of nature, 152; daily e. of death, 250, 253-254, 257; world, 273; passing and past world-historical, 284, 290, 378-379, 382, 389; in the later marginal remarks (=fn), e. of the truth of archaic being, 38fn, 235fn (Appropriation), 189fn (Expropriation). See also Occurrence [BTJS]

Ereignis (properizing event, appropriating event) - Clearly destined from the start to be the central "terminus technicus" of Heidegger´s entire Denkweg to identify the very source and "primal leap" (Ur-sprung) of experience, this etymologically rich term nevertheless goes into dormancy for almost a decade after its initial thematization in KNS 1919 and SS 1919, replaced during that period by the Christian and Greek kairological sense of time as the Moment. Er-eignis is first introduced in KNS as the central characterization of the most intense lived experience (Er-leben) of the historical I in close conjunction with the meaning-bestowing dynamics of the It which "worlds" (ZBP 69, 74f.). The I is fully there in the "It worlds" of the primal something such that "I myself properize (er-eigne) It to myself and It properizes (er-eignet) itself according to its essence" (75). This intimate involvement with the primal It of Being thus prompts the distinction between events which "happen" (passieren: ZBP 205) to me passionally and move me by situating me, and processes (Vor-gauge) which pass before me objectively. The KNS-Schema accordingly distinguishes the sheer indifference of the formal-objective "something in general" from the pretheoretical preworldly "primal something" which is the "index of the highest potentiality of life" in and for itself (ZBP 115).

In BT, however, the occasional use of Ereignis at least in the two extant Divisions returns to its mundane sense of objectified and reified impersonal historical events past and gone (SZ 250, 253, 257, 284, 290, 378, 382, 389). It is only in GA26 that a tendency back to its originally intimate sense begins to assert itself: in a redescription of ecstatic and horizonal temporality, primal time and primal history are understood dynamically as a generative temporalizing which "worlds," as an "es gibt" which yields the "nihil originarium" of a world (GA26:270/209, 272/ 210). This is more ontically described as "the Ereignis of the world-entry of beings" (274/212), or the Urereignis which is essentially generative temporalizing. Some advance is made in articulating this primal event in the concurrent seminar of GA26 on Aristotle´s Physics, where, in order to express the incomplete "underway" character of movement, dynamis (capability, power) is translated more phronetically as Eignung (aptitude, suitability), and the question is then posed how this adaptation to ... , appropriateness for . . . , determines the Ereignung of generative movement, the primal event of human history. Much like the formal indication of ex-sistence in BT, accordingly, the focus on Aristotle´s energeia ateles (in 1928 still meant for the Third Division of the never-published Second Part of BT) reverses the dominant Greek sense of finished being, pointing instead to the generative event which possibilizes actuality in the absence of presence welling up from the concealment of unconcealment (so in the later Heidegger). [KisielBT]

NT: Here and subsequently in this essay, "coming-to-pass" translates the noun Ereignis. Elsewhere, in "The Turning," this word, in accordance with the deeper meaning that Heidegger there finds for it, will be translated with "disclosing that brings into its own." [QCTechno]

Vide Que É Isto - a Filosofia? - Identidade e Diferença. [Ernildo Stein; MHeidegger: TEMPO E SER]

[GA56/57, p. 75; SZ,, pp. 250, 253, 257, 284, 290, 378, 382, 389, 440, 444.] [LHDF]

In the case of Ereignis, feasibility of an approximation is foreshadowed by the way in which the er- in Ereignis has the function of stressing and putting forth the movement of eignen in -eignis.

We found a good approximation to Ereignis in the word enowning. Above all it is the prefix en- in this word that opens the possibility for approximating Ereignis, insofar as this prefix conveys the sense of "enabling," "bringing into condition of," or "welling up of." Thus, in conjunction with owning, this prefix is capable of getting across a sense of an "owning" that is not an "owning of something." We can think this owning as an un-possessive owning, because the prefix en- has this unique capability. In this sense owning does not have an appropriatable content.

We found that none of the existing English translations of Heidegger’s word Ereignis is capable of showing the movement that runs through the en and the own, as enowning. Enowning approximates the movement of er- that runs through eignen and the eignis in Ereignis. Part of this movement is a "going all the way into and through" without possessing. We consider it a significant confirmation of the appropriateness of the word enowning that this word provides a unique possibility for bringing into English what Heidegger does, at important junctures of Contributions, when he hyphenates Ereignis. By sometimes hyphenating this word, he draws special attention to er- as an enabling power and as naming the always ongoing movement "in" and "through" without coming to rest in a "property" or "possession." We found that the en- of "enowning" is capable of doing this. [GA65EM:xx]
