Namely, that a research endeavor regarded as a whole includes its field of subject matter, the way in which this matter is to be regarded interrogatively, and the way it is to be treated in the course of being interrogated. We have encountered this threefold division in the opening section (p. 2 above) and we shall meet it again in a more hermeneutic formulation as prepossession [Vorhabe], preview [Vorsicht], and preconception [Vorgriff] (GA20:§31d below).
